Domain Names
Would you rather have your business on Board Walk or Baltic Avenue?
These two pieces of Monopoly property are much like a domain name. Think of Baltic Avenue as free domain name names, the ones that look like:
http://www.domain.com/users/you/
Where Board Walk domain names are like: AOL.com, Yahoo.com and Google.com.
If you have your business on Baltic Avenue, people wont take you serious. After all, if you can’t shell out a few dollars for a domain, you must not be doing much business.
Before you run and register a domain name, you need to consider a few things…
Is it Targeted? The first thing you want to do is make sure your domain name targets your audience. One of my domains is AISMarketing.com and it let’s people know that it deals with marketing as soon as they see it.
Can You Expand It? When you register a domain name you want to make sure that you can expand it’s content. If I would have gotten AISemailmarketing.com, it would limited me to email marketing.
Is It Memorable? Will people be able to remember the domain name? If it’s to long or not unique then people might not be able to return to your site if they didn’t bookmark it.
A Few Tips To Consider
- Tip 1: Get a .COM if at all possible.
- Tip 2: Don’t use hyphens unless it’s just separating two words. ie my-domain.com.
- Tip 3: Use a keyword or two in it if it’s a “portal” site.
- Tip 4: Make sure you target the domain towards the product(s).
Ready to get a domain name? I highly recommend and use Name Cheap. I know GoDaddy may be cheaper but do a search on Google and see how they handle complaints about spam and how they extort money from people.
